Overview

Most educational conferences are not designed using proven educational principles that maximize learning and retention. This program will use evidence-based adult learning principles to engage learners and promote long-term knowledge retention. This one day conference will highlight advances in topics such as updates on the management of pulmonary embolism, hepatitis and liver failure, oral and injectable diabetic medications, to guidelines on hypertension, direct oral anticoagulants, and opioid crisis and management.

Short, didactic sessions, case based learning, and small group discussion will all be utilized to provide an exciting exchange of ideas among learners! In the process, attendees will experience best practices for knowledge acquisition and retention.

Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Identify that pulmonary embolism represents a spectrum of disease for which diagnosis and treatment recommendations vary;
  2. Describe the challenges regarding management for patients with hepatitis and liver failure;
  3. Discuss the mechanisms of actions limitations and side effects of injectable as compared to oral diabetic medications;
  4. Summarize the current recommendations for diagnosis and optimal treatment decisions for patients with hypertension;
  5. Recognize the indications, dosages and major contraindications of the four currently FDA-approved direct oral anticoagulants;
  6. Discuss updates of opioid epidemic, understand appropriate timing of opioid initiation and consideration of non-pharmacologic treatment.

Accreditation

The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Cincinnati designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.0 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
