Overview

Among asthma patients, those with severe asthma represent the greatest area of unmet clinical need; however, the emergence of new targeted biologics has improved outcomes for some of these patients. This activity looks at when biologic therapies for severe asthma are warranted, reviews approaches to tailoring the most appropriate targeted biologic agent to patients with severe asthma based on their phenotype and endotype, and discusses strategies for navigating administrative challenges when prescribing biologic therapies.

At the end of the case, learners will play a round of Cranium Challenge to test their ability to apply what they have learned about incorporating biologic therapy for patients with severe asthma.

Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize clinical characteristics that indicate a patient is a candidate for targeted biologic therapy;
  2. Overcome challenges to implementing biologic therapy in practice;
  3. Employ emerging data to differentiate the efficacy characteristics of biologic therapies and provide personalized treatment according to the phenotypic characteristics and outstanding clinical treatment needs of each patient.
