Overview

Heart failure (HF) is a complex, progressive clinical condition that currently affects 5.7 million Americans. Its prevalence is predicted to increase by 46% to over 8 million Americans by the year 2030. Accounting for 12 to 15 million outpatient office visits per year, it is one of the most common reasons for hospital admission in patients over the age of 65. Epidemiologic studies in the general population have established that the mean age at first diagnosis of HF (80 years) has been increasing, a trend that is predicted to continue. Older adults are more prone to develop HF due to age-related changes and longer exposure to risk factors.

Despite its high incidence and prevalence, clinicians find HF difficult to diagnose and classify, particularly in older adult patients and/or those with many comorbid disorders. Further, many clinicians are not providing guideline-recommended care. In addition, clinicians may not be familiar with newer agents and their efficacy in certain classes of patients.

Join this online course as the faculty provide insights into the challenges of managing older adults with HF.

This course offers physician, nursing, and pharmacy credit (AMA, ASCP, and GAPNA).

Registration

There are no fees for participating in and receiving CME credit for this online activity.

Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of HF in older adult patients;
  2. Select appropriate testing to confirm the diagnosis of HF in older adult patients;
  3. Stage and classify (HFrEF vs. HFpEF) a patient’s HF based on their clinical presentation, current guidelines, and diagnostic testing;
  4. Describe treatment options, including newly available agents, and consider factors relevant to pharmacotherapy selection for older adult patients with HF;
  5. Develop an individualized management strategy for an older adult patient with HF incorporating both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions.
