Glomerular kidney diseases (GKDs) are a group of uncommon renal disorders primarily affecting the glomeruli. These diseases – which include immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), C3 glomerulopathy (C3G), and membranous nephropathy (MN), among others – are distinct conditions with different underlying mechanisms and clinical features. Despite these differences, GKDs all cause structural and functional abnormalities that may lead to rapid progression to end-stage kidney disease. Conventional treatments are often insufficient due to adverse effects and inconsistent data, and these treatments do not target the underlying pathological mechanisms driving disease progression. Fortunately, newer therapeutic options are available and others are on the horizon.

Learn how to align your clinical practice with emerging evidence through this series of micro-learning activities designed to share what you need to know about GKDs and new, targeted treatments. By the end, learners will understand how GKDs differ from more common forms of kidney disease, how new, targeted treatments work, and how to select patients for treatment with these new therapies.

1. Differentiate the pathogenesis of GKDs from other more prevalent renal disorders, such as diabetic kidney disease and hypertensive kidney disease, with emphasis on how these differences affect screening, diagnosis, and management strategies;
2. Describe the mechanisms of action of novel and emerging treatments for GKDs;
3. Identify appropriate patients with GKDs who can benefit from personalized treatment regimens involving new and targeted therapies in consideration of the latest clinical trial evidence.
