Participants:  Open to athletic trainers/students, EMTs, Paramedics, medical students, residents, fellows, attending physicians or anyone wanting to learn more about sideline medicine. 
                         CME credits will be provided for ATCs, EMT/Paramedics and Physicians.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the critical components of an Emergency Action Plan and be able to create and implement a plan for their specific athletic team.
  2. Recognize the important collaborative effort with emergency medical systems in maintaining an Emergency Action Plan.
  3. Identify the importance of hand-only CPR and the implementation of Take10 learning program for their community.
  4. Describe the initial triage and evaluation of the collapsed athlete.
  5. Describe the initial evaluation and causes of cardiac arrest, heat stroke, and head injury in the athlete.
  6. Diagnose the different forms of traumatic head injury and manage basic complications to provide initial management.
  7. Diagnose, treat, and understand the important lifesaving aspects of heat stroke.
  8. Explain the diagnosis and complications of cervical injuries in athletes, as well as how to treat the acute injury on the athletic field.
  9. Identify the key aspects of different spine immobilization techniques, as well as equipment removal during a cervical spine injury.
  10. Recognize and treat life-threatening chest and abdominal injuries that occur in athletes.
  11. Identify key orthopaedic injuries that can be life or limb-threatening on the field of play and how to effectively triage and treat these injuries.
  12. Discuss and perform basic airway maneuvers to provide emergency care to the athlete with acute respiratory compromise.
  13. Identify the key steps in recognizing and treating sudden cardiac arrest in athletes.
  14. Demonstrate the initial evaluation of undifferentiated collapsed athlete through simulation.
  15. Demonstrate basics of airway management, equipment removal, CPR, and application of an AED in an undifferentiated athlete.
  16. Demonstrate the ability to identify and manage patients with acute exertional heat stroke through hands on training.
  17. Demonstrate the correct reduction techniques for shoulder, ankle, and hip on the sideline.
  18. Demonstrate correct indications for tourniquet technique application for hemorrhage control.
  19. Demonstrate the proper technique for cervical immobilization and spine precautions in the injured athlete.

The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Cincinnati designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
